How to Stop Baby from Biting

  • By Dr. Tanya
  • In Activities and Playtime, Infants (4 to 12 months), Toddler (1-3 years)

When infants bite their mom while breast-feeding, mom will say, “Ouch!” loudly and put baby down. This tells baby that they can’t bite mom while feeding.

Use the same technique as baby gets older. If a nine month old should bite your shoulder, say “Ouch!” and put the baby down. You need to exhibit the behavior you want your baby to follow.

  • Tell them to touch nicely, kiss mommy, and usually giving them the time away will teach them not to bite.
  • It can be a nightmare or very embarrassing to get a phone call from the school when an older child does this.
  • Look at the situation and see if the situation can be avoided. Sometimes they may need to have separation and have a time out.
  • Always remember to give them praise for good behavior!
