Signs of anemia and how to treat it
- Signs of anemia may be subtle or may be more pronounced. Some children may appear pale or feel tired.
- Anemia is the measure of iron in your blood
- Anemia is checked with a finger poke at 9 month or 1 year appointment and again before kindergarten
- Teenage girls should get checked yearly because they lose blood each month with their period and may become anemic
- It’s important to introduce iron-fortified foods starting at 6 months of age. Pureed meats, iron fortified cereals and green vegetables are good choices.
- If your child is anemic your pediatrician may recommend an iron supplement along with iron rich foods to help your child feel better and grow and develop normally.
